In November 2008, schools from across the region came together in Bridlington to celebrate arts and explore different issues in creative ways. This annual conference was organised by East Riding Government Officers and the Development Education Centre (Hull) aimed at all 16-20 year old students from the area. A range of tutorials were run, including a very energetic music/dance seminar, young people and identity, Living Islam and a workshop which explored issues of conflict resolution using a helium tube. The event allowed people of different ages and different faiths to come together in a dynamic way and be open and share their thoughts. Leader of one of the workshops and Treasurer of United Faiths, Shazia Shah explains “Facilitating the Living Islam workshop provided me with an opportunity to share my religion, knowledge and skills with a group of young people that I probably never would have met. The workshop was simple and interactive to accommodate the differing levels of knowledge about Islam. Topics such as the portrayal of Muslims in the Media, negative stereotypes and Islam and its position around the world were all discussed. The students also had the opportunity to watch a 5 minute short film called ‘This is Islam’. The film uses different images of Islam from around the world and combined them with poetry to deliver a true message on Islam.”
