WEDNESDAY 18th NOVEMBER 2009, at LEEDS CATHEDRAL 7.30 TO 9.00pm
INTERFAITH MUSIC EVENT IN LEEDS featuring local artists – This is an opportunity to come and celebrate music of religions in our area.

Sangeeta Bali (19 years old) from Huddersfield is currently studying Primary Education at Leeds Metropolitan University. She has been actively involved in the Hindu Temple since childhood. She was previously a member of the Youth Parliament and is currently an active member of the Labour Party. As part of her education role, Sangeeta has also helped to organise many activities including Celebration Days, ICT Clubs and Numeracy and Literacy groups in schools. Sangeeta passionately believes in community development and being part of United Faiths will enable her to further promote inclusion and cultural/social integration bringing a wide diversity of people together towards a more cohesive and harmonious society.

Jade Broadley (17 years old) is a Catholic from Leeds. She is currently studying at Notre Dame College, taking A Levels in Sociology, Psychology, RE & Business. She is actively involved in Youth events at her Parish Church and has done Christian community work around Leeds. Jade feels it is important to understand other people’s beliefs and be able to share your own, and believes being involved in United Faiths will encourage this.

Felicity Crowther is an 18 year old Roman Catholic who enjoys boxercise, snooker, and singing! Her faith has been an important part of her life since she was in her early teens, mainly since she made her holy communion after returing to England from life in Switzerland. Flic has been involved in attending and running church youth and prayer groups and especially enjoys the challenge of organising fundraising events with groups of passionate people. She also loves retreat activities which she feels help put the stresses of daily life into perspective. Inter-faith dialogue and discussion is so vital to our society today, but especially in terms of allowing young people to open their minds and broaden their experiences of other cultures and faiths.

Since being involved in Islam Awareness Week at her school, Notre Dame, in 2007, Flic developed a curiosity about different cultures and religions. She was honoured to have made a speech at a recent large ISB evening event, where representatives from many different religions gathered in solidarity.

Flic hopes by joining the United Faiths youth council will allow her to carry out God’s work in the world by letting her express the message of the Catholic church through action. This new challenge will also let her reach out to understand the path’s of others. She hopes that such work will hopefully show all young (and not so young!) people that with tolerance and understanding, we can fight prejudice and solve a great many problems.

Usman Nawaz is a UK Youth Parliament rep from Rochdale who has recently moved to study at Hull University. He was also the Chair of Rochdale Youth council, member of the Sufi Muslim council and has recently been chosen to be part of the national Muslim Advisory group as a part of the PVE agenda. He has taken part in various interfaith activities such as the using Cricket for Christian-Muslim relations and Iman-Rabbi programme that bring young people from both religions to explore different issues affecting both communities.

Pritesh Tailor is studying ICT at the University of Huddersfield but is also actively involved in the National Hindu Student Forum. Through his university studies he has gained further knowledge and experience in creating websites, designing interactive applications using actionscript. He has also been part of the computer buddies scheme where he has gained experience of working with people of different ages and backgrounds. He decided to be a part of UF because he would like to experience working with people from different backgrounds to gain a better understanding of his community.

Vikas Khoshal is from Huddersfield and is a member of the Hindu Temple where he is involved in organising events for religious festivals. He is extremely interested in using sports as a mode of bringing young people together on social cohesion activities and has had a lot of experience of coaching young people in football and other sports to improve their leadership and communication skills.

Kiran Chana (16 years old) has recently finished her GCSEs and is going on to study Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Psychology at A-Level. She comes from a religious Sikh family and has grown up in the multicultural environment of Leeds. She actively utilizes various expressions of performing arts including painting, dance and theatre to perform in school and extra curriculum activities.
